Semrush Review: Is It Worth the Price for SEO?

By kelvin

SEO tools are easy to compare when the question is simply how many features they offer. The harder question is whether you will actually use enough of those features to justify the monthly cost.

Semrush has built its reputation as an all-in-one SEO and digital marketing platform, bringing keyword research, competitor analysis, rank tracking, backlink research and technical SEO into one dashboard. In 2026, the platform has expanded further into AI search visibility, making it less of a traditional SEO-only tool and more of a broader visibility platform.

But does that make Semrush worth paying for?

For SEO professionals, agencies and businesses actively working to grow organic visibility, there is a strong case. For someone who only needs occasional keyword ideas or a basic website check, the subscription can feel excessive.

What Makes Semrush Different?

The biggest selling point of Semrush isn’t any single feature. It is the way multiple SEO workflows are brought together.

A typical SEO campaign might require keyword research, competitor research, content planning, technical audits, backlink analysis and rank tracking. Semrush offers tools across these areas rather than forcing users to jump between several specialist platforms.

Its keyword database currently contains more than 28 billion keywords across 142 regional databases, according to Semrush. The platform also provides competitor and domain data that can be used to identify keywords, pages and search opportunities.

That breadth is particularly useful once SEO becomes an ongoing process rather than a one-off task.

Keyword Research Is One of Its Biggest Strengths

Keyword research is probably the first place many users will spend time inside Semrush.

The Keyword Magic Tool lets users enter a topic or seed keyword and explore related search terms, with filters for different opportunities. Semrush also provides keyword difficulty, search volume and intent-related information to help users narrow down potential targets.

The value isn’t simply discovering keywords.

The bigger advantage is being able to move from “What do people search for?” to “Which opportunities make sense for this website?”

Keyword gaps can reveal terms competitors rank for while your site doesn’t. Existing rankings can also highlight pages that are close to stronger positions and may benefit from optimization.

For content teams producing articles regularly, that workflow can save considerable research time.

Competitor Research Adds Another Layer

Semrush becomes more interesting when you stop looking only at your own website.

Its competitor research tools allow users to examine competitors’ organic keywords, pages, backlinks, paid strategies and traffic trends. Semrush also now provides tools for comparing how brands appear in AI-generated search results.

That can turn competitor research into a practical content exercise.

Instead of simply asking why another website ranks above yours, you can investigate the keywords and pages contributing to its visibility. You can then look for gaps where your own site has a relevant product, service or topic but hasn’t built comparable content.

Of course, competitor data is estimated rather than a substitute for access to another company’s analytics account. It should be treated as research intelligence, not perfect first-party data.

Site Audit Is Useful for Technical SEO

Semrush isn’t only about finding keywords.

Its Site Audit tool crawls websites and identifies technical issues that can affect search visibility. Issues are categorized by severity, while thematic reports help users understand broader areas of concern.

For beginners, this can be useful because technical SEO problems can otherwise be difficult to prioritize.

Instead of receiving a huge collection of errors with no obvious order, users can work through higher-severity issues first.

For larger websites, automated crawling and recurring audits can become even more useful because technical problems can appear after redesigns, migrations, new templates or large-scale content changes.

Rank Tracking Makes SEO Progress Easier to Monitor

Keyword research tells you what you could target. Rank tracking tells you what happened afterward.

Semrush’s Position Tracking can monitor keyword performance over time, including daily ranking updates and different locations and devices depending on the plan. Its newer SEO offerings also include tracking across AI search surfaces.

This matters because SEO is rarely about a single ranking.

You want to know whether visibility is improving across a group of important keywords, whether specific pages are gaining traction and where competitors are changing position.

For agencies, reporting is another important part of this workflow. Higher-tier plans provide more extensive reporting and collaboration options.

The Price Is Where the Debate Starts

Semrush is not a bargain SEO tool.

Current Semrush pricing shows the SEO Classic Pro plan at $139 per month when billed monthly, or $117.33 per month when billed annually. The Pro plan includes up to five websites to monitor, keyword research, competitor analysis, Position Tracking, backlinks and Site Audit.

Guru is listed at $249 per month monthly, or $208.33 per month when billed annually, adding capabilities such as historical data, more tracked websites and keywords, multi-location/device data and content optimization features. Business rises to $499 per month monthly, or $416.66 per month annually, with higher limits, Share of Voice and API access.

Semrush also has newer SEO + AI Search plans. Its current SEO plan starts at $139 monthly or $117.33 per month billed annually, while higher tiers add more AI visibility tracking, prompts, historical SEO data and additional limits.

The exact plan matters because the headline price alone doesn’t tell you what your workflow will cost.

Who Gets the Most Value From Semrush?

Semrush makes the strongest financial argument when SEO directly contributes to business growth.

For an agency managing several clients, the ability to research competitors, track rankings, audit websites and produce reports from one platform can reduce the need for multiple subscriptions.

For an in-house SEO team, it can provide a shared research and monitoring environment.

For content marketers, the combination of keyword research, competitor analysis and content optimization can make it easier to turn search data into an editorial plan.

And for businesses now paying attention to AI search, Semrush’s newer visibility tools provide another reason to consider the platform.

When Semrush May Not Be Worth It

The platform can become difficult to justify if you only use one or two tools.

If all you want is occasional keyword research, a full Semrush subscription may give you considerably more functionality than you need.

The same applies to a small website that publishes only a few pieces of content each month and doesn’t actively monitor competitors or technical SEO.

There is also a learning curve. Semrush has a large number of tools and reports, and first-time users may need time to understand which metrics actually matter. Semrush’s own review roundup notes that users who rely on only a small portion of the platform are more likely to question the cost, while some users also mention the learning curve.

That is an important consideration. Paying for a powerful SEO platform doesn’t automatically improve SEO. The value comes from turning its data into decisions and actions.

Semrush vs Using Several Smaller Tools

One way to think about the subscription is not simply Semrush vs another SEO tool, but one ecosystem vs several separate subscriptions.

You could potentially use one service for keyword research, another for rank tracking, another for technical audits and another for competitor or backlink research.

That approach may work perfectly well.

Semrush’s appeal is that these workflows can live together. You can research a competitor, discover a keyword gap, investigate your rankings, audit the relevant site and monitor progress without constantly moving between platforms.

For a serious SEO operation, that consolidation can have practical value.

Is Semrush Worth the Price?

Semrush is expensive compared with basic SEO tools, but it is also designed for users who need more than basic SEO data.

If you regularly perform keyword research, competitor analysis, technical audits and rank tracking, the platform can justify its price through the amount of work it brings together.

If you’re an agency or SEO professional, its broader reporting, monitoring and research capabilities can make the subscription easier to rationalize.

But if you’re a casual blogger, small site owner or occasional content creator who only needs keyword ideas, Semrush may offer far more than you will actually use.

Final Verdict

Semrush is best viewed as an SEO working environment rather than a single SEO tool.

Its extensive keyword database, competitor research, technical auditing, rank tracking and growing AI-search capabilities make it a comprehensive option for people who treat SEO as an ongoing growth channel.

The price, however, makes usage important. If you regularly use several parts of the platform, its all-in-one approach can make sense. If you only need one narrow SEO function, a cheaper specialist tool may be enough.

The better question isn’t simply “Is Semrush expensive?” It’s “How much of Semrush will your SEO workflow actually use?”
