History of Korean Air

Korean Air is South Korea's flagship carrier and the largest airline in the country. The airline was founded in 1946 and operates domestic and international flights. Korean Air's main hub is Incheon International Airport, with secondary hubs at Seoul Gimpo Airport and Busan International Airport. As of March 2018, Korean Air employs a total of 29,561 people and has a fleet of 179 aircraft. The airline is majority owned by the government of South Korea through its state-owned conglomerate, Korail.

Korean Air traces its history back to 1946 when the Korean National Airways Corporation (KNAC) was founded by Ji Sung-yuop with a single leased prop plane. KNAC was renamed Korean Airlines Corporation in 1951 and started international service that year from Seoul to Tokyo via Osaka. The outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950 led to KNAC being forced to suspend all operations, though it continued to serve domestic routes until September 1960. During this time, it also began operating charter services for other airlines.

In 1961 KNAC merged with two other airlines—Air France and KLM—to form the new SKYJET AIRLINES CORPORATION which became the country's first full-fledged national carrier; however, despite this mergers Skyjet would only survive until 1967 due to financial difficulties caused by the war as well as competition from Japan's JAL AIRWAYS CO LTD which had begun operations just two years earlier.

After Korea’s liberation in 1945, KAL became the first commercial airline in Asia to operate Douglas DC-3 aircraft. In 1957, KAL acquired its first jetliner, a Boeing 707. In 1969, KAL merged with two other airlines to form Korean International Airlines (KIA), which became the largest airline in South Korea in terms of fleet size. In 1987, after a series of divestitures and acquisitions, KIA became Korean Air Lines Co., Ltd. (KALC). After deregulation of the South Korean aviation market in 1996, KALC began expanding its operations into domestic and international markets.
